How Do Naturopaths Work?
There’s so much confusion and misinformation surrounding what naturopathy involves and how we work as a profession, so I thought I’d jump in and write a quick explanation of why I love my profession and the guiding principles that are the core of what I do.
There are 6 principles that underpin the naturopathic profession, and no matter where you studied, it’s likely that these professional guidelines were drummed into you! They truly sum up the nurturing, holistic nature of naturopathy and they are what separates us from the pack and stand out as health practitioners.
First Do No Harm (Primum Non Nocere)
Like many other medical professionals, we are bound by this mantra. Everything I do as a practitioner, I have this front and centre in my mind. Whenever I consider herbs, supplements or lifestyle advice, every single item has been assessed and if there’s a risk of danger to you and your health, I won’t prescribe it.
The Healing Power of Nature (Vis Medicatrix Naturae)
This is the core belief that ties all naturopath’s together. The belief that the body has an incredible ability to health itself, given the right tools and environment.
I’m sure you’ve heard of homeostasis – where the body works to bring us back into our natural balanced states – well, the naturopathic principle of vis medicatrix naturea (or VMN as it’s affectionately known as in nat circles!) follows a similar thought process.
We look at your body as a whole, and assess where things may have fallen out of balance , and provide you with the necessary tools to guide you back to your version of wellness.
Tools may include dietary tweaks, lifestyle advice, mindfulness practices, and of course, our much-loved herbal medicines.
Treat the Cause & Prevention (Tolle Causum & Preventare)
As nats, we work to identify and treat the root cause – this means we won’t just apply a band-aid and call it a day. Together with you, we come up with a treatment plan that will address your current concern, as well as provide long-term support to get to the bottom of to why it happened in the first place.
Prevention is where we thrive, we want to help you to get to the reason of why you’re feeling unwell, address this, and help prevent it from happening again.
This will usually involve some gut work, sleep hygiene, addressing potential predisposition to illness (due to family history) and mindset work.
Doctor as Teacher (Docere)
It’s our job to help educate you, so you’re empowered to make lasting changes. Doctor as teacher means we value your input into your health & really love to collaborate and encourage you to remain interested in your health, and understand why your body may need what it needs.
Treat the Whole Person (Tolle Totum)
As a holistic health practitioner, it goes without saying that treating the whole person is crucial.
*Make way for an analogy! *
Imagine your oven is broken and you want to bake a cake. So you get someone to come and fix the oven and you get cooking! Things are going great until the cake cools and you realise you added salt instead of sugar!
This is what it’s like when only one part of your health is focused on – your problem may be “fixed” from the outside, but if you haven’t been given the right ingredients (aka coping tools), you’ll never bake a successful cake!
Working with a nat is like having an assistant in the kitchen with you, handing you the ingredients to make a really yummy treat! The guess work is taken out and you end up with a recipe up can use time and time again and get consistent results!
I’ve been trained in how to analyse the latest medical studies and assess whether that intervention would be suitable for you. I’ve also learnt the wisdom of hundreds of years of herbal medicine, and together, produce a sound, personalised plan that works for your body.
It took 4 years of biochemistry, anatomy, physiology, pathology, pharmacology, nutrition, psychology, counselling & herbal medicine studies to allow me the privilege of guiding you back to your ultimate health.
Over those 4 years, I’ve worked with so many amazing clients and have seen the incredible results that stem from following these 6 naturopathic principles.
Naturopathic medicine is a science, an art & my calling; and I 100% believe there is something for you in this practice.
Hopefully, I’ve peaked your interest and you’ve gained a bit of an understanding as to how I work.
